To Be A PTA

Schools interested in Chartering a PTA should contact the state office at 702-258-7885. It only takes 10 people willing to invest $5.00 each to start a PTA.  Our bylaws template can be modified to fit the need of your school and submitted to the state office for approval. Insurance information and training of board officers will get you started on the right course. We have a group of dedicated members to answer questions and help with chartering a PTA.

Who is PTA

PTA is the largest and oldest volunteer child advocacy organization in the United States. A not-for-profit association of parents, educators, students, and other citizens active in their schools and communities, PTA is a leader in parent involvement and reminding our nation of its obligations to children.

In every day terms, PTA is a:

  • Strong advocate for public education,
  • Vital resource for families, and
  • Powerful voice for all children.

All officers and board members, whether national, state or unit, are unpaid volunteers. All members speak with a unified voice on behalf of all children, as highlighted by the PTA tagline: everychild.onevoice.

Each school PTA (unit PTA) is a self-governing unit, chartered by Nevada PTA and part of National PTA. Unit PTAs are governed by the bylaws of their organization and may not act in any manner inconsistent with Nevada PTA and National PTA. Each unit elects its officers, controls its budget and is responsible to update and amend their bylaws when necessary. National PTA and all of its constituent PTAs exist to fulfill the PTA Mission and Purposes.

NOTE: PTSA refers to those schools that recognize students as members. For the sake of this document, the governing body shall be referred to as PTA.

Purposes of PTA

  • Promote the welfare of children and youth in home, school, community and place of worship.

  • Raise the standards of home life.

  • Secure adequate laws for the care and protection of children and youth.

  • Bring into closer relation the home and the school that parents and teachers may cooperate intelligently in the education of children and youth.

  • Develop between educators and the general public such united efforts as will secure for all children and youth the highest advantages in physical, mental, social and spiritual education.

Mission of PTA

A powerful voice for all children,

A relevant resource for families and communities, and

A strong advocate for the educational and well-being of every child.

Nevada PTA Mission

The mission of Nevada PTA is to lead, train and encourage parents, teachers and community to advocate for the education, health and welfare of all children and families.

Levels of PTA

PTA Members can be anyone who believes in the PTA Mission and Purposes. Members automatically are part of National PTA and Nevada PTA, joining over 6 million members nationwide.

Membership is the foundation of PTA. It is the true measure of the success of the organization. The strength of the PTA rests in the utilization of its “people resources.” Membership may include any individual who cares about children and youth—administrators, school support staff, teachers, students, parents, grandparents and senior citizens.

An active, involved and informed membership will provide parents and teachers with a way to share experiences and knowledge about children. As the largest and most effective child advocacy group in Nevada, PTA speaks with a
unified voice for the education, health, safety and well-being of all children and youth.

  • Units (PTAs at each school), are the most important division of PTA. Units are organized and chartered by Nevada PTA in accordance with authority granted to Nevada PTA by National PTA bylaws.

  • Councils consist of five (5) or more units of PTAs within a town, city, county or other designated area and organized by authorization of Nevada PTA. A council is the coordinating body that promotes communication and cooperation among units and increases the capacity for service because of their unified strength.

  • Region Nevada PTA is divided into 6 PTA regions in order to establish a closer working relationship with councils and units.  A Region Director serves as the liaison from the Nevada PTA Board of Managers and works with the council and unit PTAs in the geographical areas of the state. The Region Director offers field service, training, provides networking opportunities and has the primary role in organizing new PTA units within the region.

  • State PTA (Nevada PTA) serves as a link between the national organization and the membership of the state. Nevada PTA is administered by a state president, four vice presidents, a secretary, and a treasurer; all elected by the general membership for a two year term. Business is transacted by delegates at the state convention and meetings of the Nevada PTA Executive Committee and Board of Managers. PTA at the state level serves two broad purposes. First, Nevada PTA forms and supports PTA units and councils by providing services such as resources, training, inspiration, programs, field service and guidance. Nevada PTA also serves as the collective voice for children and PTA members at the state level by influencing decision-makers about proposed legislation and policy affecting children, collaborating with individuals and organizations working with children, increasing membership and raising the visibility of the work of PTA.

  • National PTA is a partner with Nevada PTA in supporting unit PTAs and individual members. National PTA plays an integral role in establishing, maintaining and safeguarding programs and policies that promote the health, safety, nutrition, welfare, protection and education of children and youth. It serves as the collective voice of members at the national level.

PTA at all levels is committed to being inclusive in its efforts to represent and assist all who nurture and educate children. Individual members may belong to one or more PTAs and pay dues in each.

It is important that PTA leaders become familiar with and understand PTA’s history, mission, state and national services and projects,
Purposes, and current issues in order to more effectively communicate to potential members, “why PTA?”
